New in 2005, Enculturation Books is
a niche publisher, producing materials that promote discussion and
understanding of cultural values. In the broad field of intercultural study, our particular
interest is the use of proverbs as windows into the everyday values of a
culture.
Proverb collections are relatively common, but many of them are merely
lists of individual proverbs like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle spread on a table.
The reader has a giant task of assembling them before the big picture of the
culture emerges from all the jumbled bits.
We wish to encourage the production and distribution of
books that put the pieces together for people, as does our initial book, Why
Are Americans Like That? It is not difficult to imagine a whole series of
such books—why are the Chinese like that? or the French, the Arabs, or the
Nigerians? If you know of any such books in English, recommend them to us to
mention on our site by sending a copy to Enculturation Books, 448 E. Delwood
St., Morton, IL 61550, USA.
The grand total of books we have produced so far is one.
But great oaks from little acorns grow, if we give them time. We hope you find
our first book useful. If you have a comparable manuscript promoting
intercultural understanding through proverbs, you are welcome to submit it for
consideration.
